Reaction Paper #3
Sally Mann is a photographer who often took questionable pictures of her family around their farm. Often times, the photographer's work was very controversial as far as would it be considered as child exploitation. She would photograph her children nude sometimes as well which would raise many opinions. Personally I believe Sally Mann's work has and always will be influential in my own work. For instance, the photography I like to shoot is typically strange and questionable, often makes you feel creepy. I like to take pictures of abandoned buildings that have been destroyed over the years. I feel that my work can relate to hers because it is questionable and can even make you feel uncomfortable depending how you think and feel about it. Overall, Sally Mann's work is beautiful and unique and will remain a huge influential factor on photography throughout time.

Wedding photography is exactly how it sounds, photographs being taken of a wedding and all of the events that happen with it. The education that is expected of a wedding photographer would be knowing how to use your camera to it’s full extent. Anyone can be a wedding photographer, there are no mandatory requirements. But, the more knowledge you have in the area of photography, the better photographer you become. Which means more jobs which means more money to support yourself. It is most commonly suggested that you know how to work well with natural lighting and artificial lighting as well as working well with people and possible weather changes that aren’t easy to work with such as rain or wind.
Employment opportunities are endless with wedding photography. You can own your own business or work for someone else. You can also choose to stay local and if your work is different and your skills are great, your work may be wanted in other parts of the world which would be known as travel work. To get started, try to market your work as much as possible. Putting your work online on websites such as instagram and facebook can increase your views greatly and can lead you in the direction of possible clients. A good way to get your foot in the door would be assisting or interning with a wedding photographer. Assisting/interning can give you the right idea on what is expected of a wedding photographer and can help you decide whether that career choice is for you or not. It can also help you with knowing how to run your own wedding photography business if you choose to do so.

A typical work week would include editing pictures, printing pictures, going on photography gigs, and meeting up with clients. Pricing structure all depends on your quality of work and your experience and what is included with your photography. For instance, the more that is offered in a wedding package, the more money you can charge a client. The average high end photographer can cost anywhere between $8,000-$20,000+ per wedding. The average “simple” photographer can cost around $2,000-$8,000 per wedding. On average, a wedding photographer can make $200,000 or more a year. As a photographer, you can always sign up and register with professional organizations such as the American Society of Media Photographers and American Photographic Artists.
The photographer I interviewed for this is John Lennon of Lennon photo. John Lennon first got into photography by his brother who had photographed weddings for a living. John had went on a wedding job with his brother in Michigan and had taken pictures and “had fell in love with the idea of always being on your feet with wedding photography.” He says he had a “natural eye” for the “perfect shot.” He started photography with his brother 8 years ago and decided 7 years ago to branch off into New York with Lennon Photo. He worked 30 of his own weddings his first year. He “emerged himself” into his education with photography. He took online courses, watching youtube videos, attending some in person classes as well. His first camera was a Nikon D200. He currently shoots with a Nikon D810 and he has never done film. Some photographers that inspire him are Justin and Mary Marantz from California, Cliff Mounter who is the Nikon Ambassador and Cliff Little who is a surfer from Hawaii and takes photographs of waves.

The editing software that John uses is Lightroom, Photoshop, and Fundie. To get the “perfect shot” John believes this was the hardest question. “The moment that captures the couple and they think ‘That’s us’ would be the perfect shot. Knowing your equipment like the back of your hand and understanding photography techniques and settings, anticipating the moment with quick thinking. Understanding exposure, praying you get something, an educated guess, the decisive moment, that can all help you get the perfect shot.” (John Lennon.)

We had Janelle Brooke Photography come into class to speak the other day. Her photography is mostly based off of wedding photography and more recently, new born photography. Her work is beautiful and very creative. I felt that she was friendly and that she loved her job being a wedding photographer. I've thought about going into wedding photography but I'm not sure if that field of work would be for me personally, I feel like it is a lot of work and when someone is putting you in charge of capturing their wedding day, it's a large responsibility and I would feel panicked if I was left with that so I give Janelle and her workers props for being able to do that. Her work seemed natural and "in the moment" which I think that wedding photography should be in the moment like that. Overall, the guest speaking was nice and informative on wedding photography.
